What is Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch (SADI) Surgery?
SADI is a variation of the traditional Duodenal Switch (DS) surgery. It combines both restrictive and malabsorptive components to promote significant weight loss. In this procedure, a portion of the stomach is removed to create a smaller, sleeve-like stomach (similar to the Gastric Sleeve), and a part of the small intestine is rerouted to reduce calorie and nutrient absorption.
Why Choose SADI Surgery?
SADI is an ideal option for individuals who have struggled with severe obesity and have not been successful with traditional weight loss methods. Here’s why this procedure could be the solution for you:
- Significant and Sustained Weight Loss: Most patients lose 70-80% of their excess weight within the first 12-18 months.
- Effective for Severe Obesity: SADI is particularly effective for patients with a BMI of 40 or higher or those who have not had success with other weight loss methods.
- Improved Health Conditions: SADI can help resolve or improve obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and joint pain.
- Long-Term Results: Because of its dual approach (restriction and malabsorption), SADI provides long-lasting weight loss results that can be maintained over the years.
Who is a Candidate for SADI Surgery?
SADI is generally recommended for individuals who:
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher (severe obesity), or BMI 35-40 with obesity-related conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.
- Have been unsuccessful with non-surgical weight loss methods like diet and exercise.
- Are committed to making lasting lifestyle changes, including healthy eating habits and regular exercise.
- Have a history of difficulty losing or maintaining weight, or have had prior weight loss surgery without achieving lasting results.
- Are in good overall health and able to undergo surgery with minimal risk.
Note: During your initial consultation, our Mayo Clinic-trained surgeons will evaluate your health and weight loss goals to determine if SADI is the right fit for you.
What to Expect During SADI Surgery
- Initial Consultation: We will review your health history, goals, and discuss the benefits and risks of the procedure. A physical examination, lab tests, and imaging may be performed to assess your eligibility.
- The Surgery: SADI surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 2-4 hours. The procedure is minimally invasive, using small incisions to access the stomach and intestines.
- Recovery: Most patients stay in the hospital for 2-3 days after surgery, with a full recovery taking about 4-6 weeks. You will be guided through a structured diet plan, beginning with clear liquids and gradually progressing to soft foods and regular meals.
- Post-Op Support: Our team will provide continuous support with nutritional counseling, lifestyle recommendations, and follow-up appointments to ensure your success and monitor your progress.
