A gastric bypass, like the sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical procedure done to help you lose weight. In this operation, the food you eat is rerouted, essentially “bypassing” the stomach. Like the sleeve gastrectomy, it also has multiple effects that promote weight loss.
- A small pouch is created at the top of the stomach which limits the amount of food that can be consumed in one meal.
- Hunger craving is satisfied with small meals.
- Bypassing the stomach inhibits the hormonal/metabolic effects that promote fat storage and weight gain.
- Can have a positive effect on patients with type 2 diabetes and glucose control

Am I a candidate for gastric bypass?
Traditionally, and according to NIH (National Institute of Health) guidelines, patients with the following conditions are potential candidates for gastric bypass or other weight loss surgery procedures.
- Obesity with BMI (Body Mass Index) over 40
- Obesity with BMI over 35 and related health conditions
- Type 2 Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Osteoarthritis of the lower joints and spine
A gastric bypass may also be appropriate for those patients with a BMI below 35 who have obesity related health problems, or have been unsuccessful with diet, exercise, and/or medical weight loss programs.
What to expect from surgery and recovery?
You will be admitted to pre-operative care at the hospital. The surgeon and anesthesia provider will visit with you and your family/support person prior to surgery to assure your questions are answered and you are ready for surgery. Typically, the procedure lasts about 2 ½ to 3 hours but may vary depending on each patient’s unique anatomy. You will typically spend one night in the hospital and be discharged on the following day. Most patients will need 1-2 weeks at home after the operation to recover. Your surgeon and the Transform team will follow you closely after to assure and support your success in recovery and new weight loss journey.
